Imagined Landscapes
I use the alternative photographic process of chemigrams to invent and explore landscapes. On black-and-white photographic paper, I apply various resists and darkroom chemistry directly to the photographic emulsion, allowing the actions of developer and fixer to carve landscapes that feel both familiar and otherworldly. The resulting terrains emerge through reactions that cannot be fully predicted or repeated. Once the chemigram dries, I place it on a light pad and move across its surface with a macro lens on my camera, as if I am flying over an aerial landscape, searching for zones where lines, textures, and tonal shifts coalesce into compelling formations. The chemigram creates the terrain, while macro photography allows me to re-enter and reinterpret it. These chemigram landscapes reflect how land itself is shaped over time—by pressure, erosion, flow, and interruption.
